Not every crack needs repair. Here's how to tell the difference between a cosmetic hairline and a sign of structural movement.
Hairline cracks (under 1/16")
Almost always cosmetic. Concrete and drywall shrink as they cure — small surface cracks are normal. Monitor them, but don't panic.
Cracks 1/16" to 1/4"
Worth watching. Mark the ends of the crack with a pencil and date. If they extend over the next few months, schedule an inspection.
Cracks wider than 1/4"
Get an inspection. Active settlement is likely.
Horizontal cracks in basement walls
Always serious. These usually indicate the wall is being pushed in by hydrostatic soil pressure and needs stabilization.
Stair-step cracks in brick
Following the mortar joints in a zigzag — these almost always indicate foundation movement and should be inspected promptly.
Cracks that leak water
Need to be sealed regardless of size — water entry accelerates further damage.
