Polyurethane Foam vs Mudjacking: Which Concrete Leveling Method Wins in Huntsville?

Sunken driveways, settled walkways, and uneven patio slabs are common in Huntsville thanks to expansive red clay, washout from poor drainage, and decades of freeze-thaw cycling. Two methods can lift settled concrete back to grade: traditional mudjacking (also called slabjacking) and modern polyurethane foam injection. They both work — but they don't work the same way, last the same length of time, or cost the same. This is the complete comparison.

Bottom Line

For nearly every Huntsville concrete leveling project, polyurethane foam is the better long-term value. Mudjacking costs less upfront but the slurry erodes in our wet clay soils, often re-settling within a decade. Foam adds almost no weight, won't wash out, and cures in minutes — and the small injection points disappear in driveway expansion joints.

Why Concrete Settles in Huntsville

Most settled slabs in our area trace back to three causes: void formation under the slab from washout (especially near downspouts and drainage), expansive clay shrinkage during dry summers, and poor compaction at original install. Both leveling methods address symptoms, but only when paired with drainage correction do they last. We routinely include downspout extensions and grade correction in our scope to prevent the void from reforming.

How Polyurethane Foam Leveling Works

A 3/8-inch hole is drilled through the slab. Two-part polyurethane is injected; the chemicals react and expand, filling voids and lifting the slab in controlled lifts of as little as 1/16 inch. The foam cures rigid within 15 minutes — the slab can be driven on immediately. Because foam is hydrophobic and structurally cross-linked, it doesn't erode in groundwater or compress under load like cementitious slurry can.

How Mudjacking Works

Larger holes (1-2 in) are drilled through the slab and a cement-sand slurry is pumped underneath at high pressure to lift the concrete. The technique has been used for almost a century and still has a place — especially for very heavy commercial slabs and certain large void fills. But for typical Huntsville residential driveways and sidewalks, the weight of the slurry can compact the underlying soil further, and the slurry itself erodes in our wet seasons.

When We Recommend Each

We recommend polyurethane foam for 95% of Huntsville residential projects: driveways, walkways, pool decks, garage floors, interior slabs, and step/porch leveling. We recommend mudjacking only when budget is tight on a non-critical exterior slab and the homeowner accepts the shorter lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does polyurethane last?

When installed over corrected drainage, polyurethane foam is permanent. The material itself doesn't degrade in normal soil conditions.

Will the foam show?

Injection holes are 3/8 inch and patched with color-matched concrete patch. On most driveways they're virtually invisible within a week.

Can polyurethane lift a settled house?

No — polyurethane lifts slabs and exterior concrete. Settled house foundations require structural piers (push or helical).

Is polyurethane environmentally safe?

Yes. Cured polyurethane is inert and certified safe for use over potable water lines.

Why is foam more expensive?

Material cost is higher per cubic foot, but installation is faster, cure is immediate, and longevity is dramatically longer — total lifetime cost is lower.
