Foundation Settlement Tilting the Whole Home
When one side of the foundation drops — even half an inch — every floor tied to that wall slopes toward it. This is the most common cause of slope in Huntsville and shows up most in homes with poor drainage, large trees within 15 feet of the foundation, or filled lots.
Steel push piers driven to load-bearing strata stop further settlement and, with hydraulic lift, often restore much of the original elevation.
Crawl Space Pier and Beam Failures
In pier-and-beam homes, the wood girders running across the crawl space carry the floor joists. Settled masonry piers under those girders, or rotted girders themselves, drop the entire floor system on that bay.
We replace failed wood girders with steel or LVL beams, reset piers on solid bearing, and lift the floor system back to level — usually a 1–3 day job.
Rotted or Sagging Joists
Decades of crawl-space moisture weaken joists from below. They lose stiffness, deflect under load, and floors slope between supports. Sistering — bolting new joists alongside the old ones — restores the original strength.
This is one of the most common interior repairs we do across Huntsville and Madison.
Crawl Space Moisture Behind Almost Every Slope
Sustained crawl-space humidity above 60% degrades wood. After 20–40 years, the cumulative damage shows as slope. Encapsulation plus a dehumidifier stops the cycle for the future; structural repair fixes what's already moved.
In our inspections, moisture is a contributing factor to roughly 80% of sloping-floor cases.
Poor Original Construction or Undersized Framing
Some older Huntsville homes — especially additions and DIY projects from the 60s and 70s — were built with undersized joists or improper supports. Those floors slope from day one and get worse with time.
Reinforcement with engineered beams and additional supports brings them up to modern load standards.
The Sloping Floor Repair Process
Step one: laser-level floor mapping during a free inspection. Step two: written report identifying the cause. Step three: written estimate with every joist, beam, pier, and dehumidifier listed. Step four: 1–4 day repair, mostly from the crawl space.
Lifetime transferable warranty on structural work. Most slopes can be lifted to within 1/4" of level when caught early.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much slope is too much in a Huntsville home?
More than 1" across 20 feet is the standard threshold for inspection. Beyond 1.5" is almost always structural.
Can sloping floors be lifted back to level?
Most can, with hydraulic lift and proper supports. Severe long-term slope may not fully recover but can be stabilized.
Will lifting a sloping floor crack the walls?
Done slowly over days, no. We lift in small increments to let drywall, trim, and tile adjust gradually.
What's the cost to fix sloping floors in Huntsville?
Most repairs run $3,500–$12,000. Major settlement lifts on large brick homes can reach $20,000+.
Can I just install new flooring over sloping floors?
No — the slope will telegraph through the new floor and the underlying cause will keep getting worse. Fix the structure first.
