Foundation Repair in Madison, AL
Madison grew fast, and much of it is slab-on-grade houses built in the last 30 years. That changes what goes wrong compared with older Huntsville.

What is under Madison
Madison sits west of Huntsville between Redstone Arsenal and the Limestone County line, and the city itself straddles both Madison and Limestone counties. The Geological Survey of Alabama's 2015 Redstone assessment describes the area's shallow geology as Tuscumbia Limestone and Fort Payne Chert weathered into clayey soils with solution-enhanced fractures. That is the same red clay over limestone found across the valley.
Problems typical of newer subdivisions
In a subdivision, lots are often cut and filled to level them. If fill was not compacted well, the part of the slab sitting on fill can settle more than the part on native clay. Symptoms usually appear within the first 5 to 15 years: a diagonal crack across a garage slab, a gap opening between brick and window frame, or tile cracking in a straight line across a kitchen.
- Check whether the house is still under a builder's structural warranty before paying for repair.
- Look at how the lot drains. Many Madison yards slope toward the house at the back after landscaping changes.
- Note whether cracks show up on the side that faces the low part of the lot.
Madison permits for foundation work
The City of Madison Building Department's FAQ says a permit is required for work on a building or structure, lists renovations and remodels, and notes that subfloor work requires a permit while cosmetic items like flooring do not. Its permitting page also says all retaining walls need a permit, and that every application must include a signed invoice or contract showing the scope and price. Foundation repair is not named on either page, so call before work starts.
